We want your first firearm experience to be a positive and friendly one in a fun, safe environment. This is a 1-2 hour training session that can be set to accommodate your schedule. An NRA CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR will design the course around the needs of the student in order to understand the safe use of various types of firearms and select one that will best serve you. Private Instruction can also include any of the intermediate and advanced skills offered by our training facility.

Class covers:

  • Safety considerations.
  • Fitting a gun to you as a shooter rather than the shooter to the gun.
  • Mechanical functions of firearms.
  • Biomechanics of shooting including stances, trigger control and sight alignment.
  • Mental preparation / proper mindset.
  • Safe storage of firearms.
  • Ammunition.

The firearm world can seem intimidating and overwhelming when just starting out with them. We want your first experience to be a positive and friendly one in a fun, safe environment. This is a 5 hour training designed to help students understand the safe use of various types of firearms and select one that best serves your needs as an individual. There is NO age limit in the class and we greatly encourage families to attend and ask questions.

  • Ethical considerations.
  • Safety considerations.
  • Safe storage of firearms.
  • Ammunition.
  • Reasons people own firearms.
  • Mental preparation / proper mindset.
  • Fitting a gun to you as a shooter rather than the shooter to the gun.

  • How to legally buy / transfer/ register guns in California.
  • Federal Laws and guns.
  • Traveling with guns.

Shooting:

There is a shooting portion to the class. Students may bring their own firearms /ammunition (no steel ammo in the range) or we will provide 22 LR caliber firearms for you to try that are included in the price of the class.

  • Weeding through the piles of self defense junk available to find reliable tools that you can actually use LEGALLY to defend yourself and your loved ones. This includes Flashlights, Stun Guns, Pepper Sprays, and others including a brief intro to firearms.

The Instructor: Mike Rynearson is a previous Police Officer here in California. He is a Peace Officer Standards and Training certified instructor (POST) in firearms, weaponless defense, impact weapons, and several other fields. He has taught across the United States since 1996 and prides himself on offering a friendly, low pressure, open environment where students can express their own concerns and personal needs. Students are not required to participate in any hands on self defense techniques if they don’t want to.

This training course provides a thorough interactive presentation consisting of 12 hours of instruction in a safe and fun environment. Students will participate throughout lessons that exceed the requirements for most counties in Northern California set forth for applicants prior to applying for their concealed weapons license through their local Sheriff or Police Department. The completion of the class itself does NOT guarantee the individual will receive their license.

  • Ethical considerations.
  • Special safety considerations.
  • Selecting a Firearm for personal protection.
  • Selecting ammunition for personal protection.
  • Storing a handgun safely outside the home (lock boxes, etc…).
  • Styles and types of holsters.
  • The four levels of awareness.
  • Responsibility of carrying lethal force.
  • Safe Storing and transportation of guns in general as required by California law.
  • Mental preparation / proper mindset.
  • Avoiding life-threatening confrontations.
  • Psychological / physiological changes during an attack.
  • Controlling and responding to a violent encounter.
  • Emotional, legal, and social aftermath.

This class is designed to allow students to learn the skills, knowledge, and attitude they need in using their handgun for self defense. All use of force updates and legal requirements for CCW renewal course are also met. All instruction is based on tried and true techniques, presented in a safe and fun format in order to fulfill the needs of a diverse group of students. Limited to six students.

BSIS Security Guard Training - Overview

BSIS Security Guard Training – Overview

This is an overview of all the classes you will find pertaining to BSIS Guard Training.

A security guard must complete 40 hours of required training to receive their Guard Card. They must also complete an 8-hour refresher course every 12 months after completing the 40-hour course.
We offer the security Guard training to make it affordable for customers.
We break them down like this:

Phase 1 – Powers of Arrest (8 hrs total)
This gets you started and lets you get to work!

Phase 2 – 16 hours: Must complete another 16 hours within 30 days from the day the guard’s registration card is issued.

Topics include:

  • Public Relations (Community and Customer)
  • Observation and Documentation
  • Communication and its Significance
  • Liability / Legal Aspects

Phase 3 – 16 hours: Must complete another 16 hours of courses within 6 months from the day the guard’s registration card is issued.

Topics include:

  • Arrest
  • Search and Seizure
  • Handling Difficult People
  • Courtroom Demeanor
  • Officer Safety

 

Baton / Impact Weapons

To obtain a Baton Certificate, you first have to have your BSIS Security Guard Card.

When you’re done with this course, you can carry a colapsible baton, staright baton, or side handle baton (PR-24) while working as a Security Guard in CA.

8 hours of instruction on the following subjects:

  1. Moral and legal aspects of baton usage.
  2. Use of force.
  3. Baton familiarization and uses.
  4. First aid for baton injuries.
  5. Fundamentals of baton holding
  6. Stances and grips.
  7. Target areas.

Chemical Agents

To carry pepper spray or other chemical agents as a Security Guard in California, you need to attend and pass an approved course.

We provide a 4 hour class in carrying chemical agents as a security professional that covers the following topics:

  1. Moral and legal aspects of chemical agent use.
  2. History of chemical agents.
  3. Proper deployment of chemical agents.
  4. Selection of which chemical agents to carry and why.
  5. Decontamination and clean up.

A chemical agent / pepper spray card is good for the lifetime of the owner!

 

Exposed Firearm Training

This 16 hour course is required to obtain your exposed firearm permit.

You’ll get 8 hours of classroom training that will include, moral and legal aspects of firearms use, firearms nomenclature, weapons handling and shooting fundamentals, and emergency procedures.

We also offer firearms biannual qualifications and renewal classes to maintain your license within California law.

You must have your exposed firearms card in the caliber of the weapon that you are carrying for it to be valid. There is a small fee to add calibers to your license. You may have up to 5 listed at any one time.

BSIS Security Guard Training

Three phases to graduation

In order to obtain a Security Guard license in the State of California, a few requirements must first be satisfied.

The applicant must be 18 years of age. They must show US citizenship or legal right to work in the United States. They must not have been previously convicted of any disqualifying criminal offenses (see page 2). A security guard must complete 40 hours of required training to receive their Guard Card. They must also complete an 8-hour refresher course every 12 months after completing the 40-hour course. It is typical for an employer to offer the 8 hours of training every year to sustain the guard card.
As part of that training, a security guard must complete an 8-hour Power to Arrest training course prior to being placed on post (employed). In addition, 16 hours of training is required within 30 days of the initial license being issued and an additional 16 hours within the first six months.

Phase 1: Powers of Arrest (8 hrs total)

Length (A): 4 Hours of Basic Security Guard training in the following subject matter:

  • Overview of Power to Arrest Manual and subject matter.
  • Definition of arrest and discussion on the implications to the subject, the guard and the company.
  • Lecture/discussion on escalation and de-escalation techniques in the use of force.
  • Lecture/discussion in the use of restraint techniques and their implications.
  • Discussion of trespass laws and implications of enforcement.
  • Completion of the Power to Arrest Training Manual Test with 100% score in accordance with the Manual’s Administering Instructions.

Length (B): 4 hours of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism Awareness Training

Firearms Requirements for Security Guards, Alarm Agents, Private Investigators and Private Patrol Operators
A security guard’s registration card does not allow the security guard to carry a weapon; the security guard must also have a valid exposed firearm permit and/or a baton certificate. It is ILLEGAL to carry a firearm without a firearm permit and a valid security guard registration. It is ILLEGAL to carry a baton without a baton permit and a valid security guard registration. (Pg12 2011 BSIS Powers of Arrest Manual)
Note: It is illegal for a licensee or registrant to carry a CONCEALED weapon on duty without a permit issued by local authorities. Your BSIS firearms card must also have the caliber of your concealed weapon listed on it or it is not valid.

Filing an Application
To apply for a firearm permit, you must:

  • Take a 14-hour course (8 hours classroom, 6 hours range) in the carrying and use of firearms given by a Bureau- certified firearms training instructor at a Bureau certified training facility
  • Pass the written and range exams given at the end of the course
  • Be 18 years of age
  • Be a United States citizen or have permanent legal alien status; and
  • Submit a firearm permit application, submit a Live Scan form (which is appropriate to your license or registration) signed by the Live Scan site Operator.. Send your application package to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, P.O. Box 989002, West Sacramento, CA 95798-9002

Classroom Training:

During your eight hours of classroom training, you will learn moral and legal aspects of firearms use, firearms nomenclature, weapons handling and shooting fundamental emergency procedures.

Range Training:

The six hours of range training will give you practice in safely handling and firing your weapon. You must requalify on the range twice a year before renewing your permit.

Training Schools:

Schools and training instructors must be certified by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. For a list of licensed training schools, call (800) 952-5210.

Renewals:

Firearm permits expire two years from the date of issuance. An applicant must requalify four times during the life of the permit: twice during the first year after the date of issuance, and twice during the second year with each caliber listed on the license. Requalifications must be at least four months apart. The application for renewal should be submitted to the Bureau within 60 days before the expiration date. The current fee for renewing a firearm permit is $98. You may not renew your permit once you have allowed it to expire. You must instead apply for a new permit.

Weapons Incidents:

A security guard who discharges a weapon while on duty (except on the range) must: (1) report the incident to his or her employer within 24 hours and (2) file a written report with the Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs, within 7 days. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
